EU Report: Israel is an Innovation Leader, But Faces ChallengesMay. 29, 2013
Israel is still ranked high among leading states in R&D investments, but might face great challenges in the coming years, that will make it harder to keep leading, claims the new State of Innovation report by Innovation Union of the EU.
According to the report Israel’s overall level of innovation performance places it among the group of European “innovation leaders”. Only Sweden, Switzerland and Finland show higher levels of innovation performance.
From the report: "In spite of this high performance in the field of research and innovation, Israel faces some structural challenges that have created certain stagnation over the last decade. Budgets for Israeli universities have not increased in line with the growth of student numbers resulting in a decline in scientific production and outward mobility of students. Venture Capital (VC) has fallen due to the low returns on VC investments. As a consequence, the total funds available for investment are at a lower level than in previous years. Israeli fund management firms need to raise new funds if they are to continue their important role in supporting Israeli start-ups".
